Fibromyalgia and Feldenkrais

Ruth describes her journey dealing with Fibromyalgia and how the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education taught her how to move in a pain free way.

“My journey has been long and interesting. I had fibromyalgia for 30 years. So some of the treatments that I’ve received have been directly related to my fibromyalgia. And so I’ve gone through a variety of things, including chiropractic. osteopathy, craniosacral, reiki, massage, and now Feldenkrais.

I was having severe sciatica pain and my personal trainer recommended that I come to see Fariya for Feldenkrais. So I did. I started to understand that I didn’t have to be in pain all the time. With fibromyalgia, you get very used to being in pain. I began very, very quickly to start being relieved of the pain that was presenting when I came to see her, which was the sciatica pain.

What I really enjoy about this particular treatment is that you get to learn things and you get to sort of see if you can manage it on your own. I don’t want to be dependent on a treatment. I want to be able to do some stuff on my own
for sprucing up now and again. There are always ways, there are always things that can be done and they’re probably really subtle changes that can make the difference between pain and no pain.

When you have sciatica pain and when you have Achilles pain, it’s very difficult to walk or to put your shoes on, tie them up. Your socks, no. So I can do those things and I’ve been able to do them now since I started coming to Fariya.

I have recommended Fariya and her Feldenkrais treatments to just about anybody that I know that is experiencing pain or discomfort. They’ll find something out about their body and the mind-body connection that they never knew was there. You change your bad habits into good habits without having to really work at it. It just happens. I don’t have to feel pain. I can do things that will take the pain away. “
